The Journal of Physician Assistant Education

eJournalPress Web site | Instructions to Authors

The Journal of Physician Assistant Education is the Association's official journal. This peer-reviewed quarterly publication was renamed in 2006, after 8 years of publication as Perspective on Physicician Assistant Education. The first issue of JPAE was mailed to all PAEA members in April.

JPAE is dedicated to advancing PA education by publishing scholarly manuscripts germane to PA educators and by providing a forum for the sharing of ideas and innovations that will enhance the education of PA students.

Submissions are the lifeblood of any journal, and PAEA faculty members and others with an interest in PA education are encouraged to submit manuscripts for publication. Manuscripts must be submitted through the journal's eJournalPress Web portal at http://jpae.msubmit.net. All manuscripts should conform to the Uniform Requirements for Manuscripts Submitted to Biomedical Journals and to the requirements of the American Medical Association Manual of Style, 9th ed. Samples of reference formats can also be found on the National Library of Medicine Web site.

For assistance or with questions, contact the journal's associate editor Eileen Evans at eevans@paeaonline.org; 703-548-5538, ext. 307; or managing editor, Steven Lane, at slane@paeaonline.org; 703-548-5538, ext. 310.

Annual Report

22nd Annual Report on Physician Assistant Educational Programs in the United States, 2005-2006

The first national survey of PA programs was administered in the fall of 1984. The questionnaire requested information on a variety of program “activities” including institutional sponsorship, financial support, program personnel (faculty and support staff), characteristics of applicants and students enrolled, curriculum, student attrition, and graduate employment characteristics. The findings from the 1984 survey were published as the First Annual Report on Physician Assistant Educational Programs in the United States, 1984—1985 and, to date, a total of twenty one Annual Reports have been published.

The data presented in the report over the years represents responses from more than 85% of the PA programs. This high rate of response leads the authors to present the findings as representative of the physician assistant educational programs in the United States. Given that the basic elements of the annual survey have remained consistent over its twenty year history, a significant amount of data has been generated that can be used to depict the typical or average PA educational endeavor. The consistency in collection of data has also provided the ability to detect trends or document changes as they occur over time. Identified trends have been analyzed to generate reports on the following items:

  • Characteristics of ARC-PA-accredited PA programs that have closed
  • Analysis of PA program personnel turnover
  • Characteristics of graduate-level PA programs
  • Analysis of Unlicensed Medical Graduates admitted to PA programs
  • A review of program characteristics by sponsoring institution

How to Order

22nd Annual Report on Physician Assistant Educational Programs in the United States, 2005-2006 is available for $50.00. Each PAEA member program that contributes information to the survey receives two free copies.
