Faculty Development Institute

Preceptor Development Program Website Link

Rationale:

The Faculty Development Institute received requests from program faculty to consider ways to provide preceptor training for community preceptors. After researching the topic we discovered a number of different programs that are already in use. A very extensive, well developed, and user friendly site was created and is maintained by Mountain Area Health Education Center of North Carolina (MAHEC). It is very well received by preceptors. As a resource for use by PAEA faculty, the FDI has decided to provide a link to the MAHEC site. This link is intended to help create a preceptor development program that is tailored to a program's particular needs. MAHEC encourages regional medical education faculty to use and adapt the materials from their website. These materials can be accessed and utilized without cost provided MAHEC is acknowledged.

MAHEC site:

The web site address is http://www.mahec.net

The site includes:

  • Strategies for integrating learners into a busy practice
  • E-learning tools that include a number of different modules on precepting skills such as setting expectations, giving feedback and the evaluation of learners.
  • For a nominal fee, CME credit is available after completing a module.
  • A list of resources

Suggestions for using the materials:

1. The site may be made available to preceptors by listing it in the program's preceptor manual.
2. A handbook of materials can be complied as a preceptor resource book and included with the preceptor manual
3. Copies of relevant handouts can be given to clinical preceptors during site visits or as special circumstances arise.
4. A program may want to develop a seminar to be given locally using the information as a framework.

Feedback:

Please visit the site and let the FDI (calhoun@duq.edu) know what you think of the materials. If you decide to use some of the materials please provide us and the MAHEC with feedback on the program you develop from it.
