Professional Service
On a national level, faculty members have many opportunities to serve within their representative organizations. The Physician Assistant Education Association (PAEA), the American Academy of Physician Assistants (AAPA), the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA) and the Accreditation Review Commission on Physician Assistants (ARC-PA) all provide calls for committee openings throughout the year. It is helpful if the program is supportive of the faculty member in applying for these openings. Most institutions provide some sort of financial support in terms of travel, registration, housing, etc., to encourage participation and recognize the PAs participation in their national community.
PA educators can often play a crucial role in promoting and advancing the PA profession on a state and regional level. Working with the state legislature on workforce issues, serving on the state board of medical examiners, lobbying for healthcare reform, advocating for PAs on hospital credentialing committees, and organizing informational sessions for health career counselors to encourage more applicants from diverse backgrounds to apply to PA school, are just a few examples of how you can get involved in professional service.
Other opportunities include becoming a peer reviewer for the Journal of Physician Assistant Education (JPAE), the Journal of the American Academy of Physician Assistants (JAAPA), or other educational and medical journals.
