University Service

Within the university setting, there may be a hierarchy of committee service appointments. Faculty may be expected to serve on program/department committees, and with experience may advance and serve as chair. Service on college and university committees will expand the faculty member’s involvement on campus and may help support them over time in the promotion and tenure process.

At the program level, serving as a faculty advisor can be a rich and rewarding experience for both student and faculty member. The advisor can serve as a mentor for a master’s project, as a sponsor for student writing competitions, or for other activities that facilitate personal and professional development. This role may be extended and expanded to include becoming a faculty mentor. Similar activities may be included in the relationship, but may also include serving as a peer reviewer on manuscript drafts, portfolio/dossier reviews, faculty development, etc. Again, this may provide a rewarding experience for both faculty members to grow and develop professionally. University committees include:

  • Rank and Tenure
  • Promotion and Graduation
  • Diversity
  • Admissions
  • Insitutional Review board
  • Health and Safety
  • Curriculum
  • Faculty Senate
  • Promotion and Graduation

Service to the university may also include volunteering time to such activities as:

  • Scholarship campaigns
  • Mentoring junior faculty
  • Fundraising activities
