Signing Up to Practice Primary Care
U.S. Rep. Jim Matheson was on hand last fall to witness four University of Utah Physician Assistant Program (UPAP) students signing commitment letters to practice primary care following graduation from UPAP. The Congressman congratulated first-year students Kyle Hilton, Heather Hinton, Marguerite King, and Kori Keylon, who were selected to receive Primary Care Practice Awards in the amount of $44,000 each to support their UPAP tuition. The inspired initiative, in response to passage of the Affordable Care Act and funded through the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), is designed to help alleviate a growing shortage of primary care PAs.

A total of 16 UPAP Primary Care Practice Awards will be given over the term of the five-year grant, made possible by the Expansion of Physician Assistant Training (EPAT) initiative. Nationally, a total of $32 million over five years will be invested to increase the number of PAs through expanded enrollment in grantee programs.
