The Republican National convention is now over, having narrowly dodged a hit from tropical storm Isaac. In a long-anticipated address, candidate Mitt Romney officially accepted the GOP’s presidential nomination. Next up is the Democratic National Convention, to be held in Charlotte, North Carolina, September 4−6. President Obama will accept his party’s nomination for a second term in a speech Thursday evening, September 6. With television coverage of these events not as ubiquitous as it used to be, the two parties used social media and their websites to connect with the party faithful. More > Full Slate of Candidates for Board of Directors Election A number of members have declared their candidacy for the 2013 PAEA Board of Directors. Four positions are open on the Board — president elect, secretary/ treasurer, and two at large seats. Current board members Karen Hills and Theresa Horvath are running for president elect. Secretary/treasurer Bill Kohlhepp is seeking a second term in that position, and four candidates are vying to fill two at large seats. Learn more about these candidates. Board/Committee Chair Retreat Brings New Ways of Thinking for PAEA By Jeanette Smith
Thirty PAEA board members, committee chairs, and staff came together August 9 and 10 in Hood River, Oregon, for the fourth annual combined board/chair retreat. Earlier that week, the board met separately in retreat mode and finished with a formal meeting. Both groups tackled new topics and considered fresh directions for the Association. Past President Ted Ruback joined up with the board during an afternoon excursion in the Columbia River gorge. More > Be Part of the Holistic Review Admissions Project To address the challenges affecting minority enrollment in PA programs, PAEA has initiated a pilot project using a holistic admissions review process initially developed by the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) in 2007. In coordination with Dr. Juan Gilbert, creator of the admissions software program Applications Quest, PAEA invited four member programs to participate in the inaugural round of the project: University of Southern California, University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine, University of South Alabama, and the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus. Now it is looking for additional participants. More > Editorial Positions Available for PAEA Journal PAEA’s peer-reviewed publication, The Journal of Physician Assistant Education (JPAE), is inviting applications for two member positions on its editorial advisory board as well as for an academic law feature editor. JPAE is dedicated to advancing PA education by publishing scholarly manuscripts germane to PA educators and providing a forum for the sharing of ideas and innovations to enhance PA education. Committee Calls Extended: The Best Way to Get Involved It's not that often in life that you get a second chance, so be sure to take advantage of this one! You'll be surprised by the numerous benefits that volunteering offers you. Three committees need additional members for terms beginning January 2013: Awards Committee, Leadership Development and Recruitment Committee, and PACKRAT. But don't delay. PAEA Joins AAMC in Amicus Brief for High-Profile Case PAEA, along with several other organizations, has joined the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) in an amicus brief filed with the Supreme Court in the case of Fisher v. University of Texas at Austin. In this case, the Court is being asked to revisit the issue of race being used as a factor in college undergraduate admissions.
