CEC Hits the Ground Running
By Jack Percelay The Clinical Education Committee (CEC) has been extremely productive during its ten-month existence, and rightly so, given that the committee is charged with addressing issues involving the clinical component of PA education. Find out more. > Society of Teachers of Family Medicine and PAEA Plan Collaboration Effort By David Keahey At the 2011 Society of Teachers of Family Medicine (STFM) Conference this past spring, leaders from STFM and PAEA outlined goals for a collaborative endeavor. Interprofessional education and joint national advocacy efforts to improve workforce and patient outcomes emerged as the top priorities. More > Howard Ross to Deliver 2011 Keynote Address at Education Forum Don’t miss this year’s keynote address, “Exploring Diversity, Inclusion, and the Unconscious Mind,” scheduled for Thursday morning, November 3, in New Orleans. For more about his background and accomplishments, click here and scroll down. PAEAonline.org Gets a New Look PAEA is updating the navigation system for its website PAEAonline.org. The changes will be made in "real time" on July 5 and 6. Visitors will find the new navigation menus to be intuitive and user-friendly, allowing content to be found more easily. The new look is the result of a year of work with PAEA’s Web Advisory Group, beginning with a member survey late in 2009. More > Call for Motions Motions to be considered at the 2011 PAEA Annual Business Meeting during the Forum in New Orleans are due in the national office by midnight, Pacific Time, Monday, August 22. Motions may be submitted by PAEA committees, member programs, and the board of directors. More > PAEA Announces Annual Committee Vacancies Have you been thinking about becoming more involved? Several PAEA committees have openings for terms beginning in January 2012: Awards Committee, CASPA, Committee on Cultural and Ethnic Diversity, Conference Curriculum Committee, Faculty Development Institute, Finance Committee, Governance Committee, Leadership Development and Recruitment Committee, PACKRAT, and the Research Institute. Government Relations Update In May, PAEA Director of Government Relations Athena Abdullah attended the annual meeting of the Coalition for Health Funding with Office of Management and Budget (OMB) staff. Additionally she attended a Health Professions and Nursing Education Coalition (HPNEC) meeting with U.S. Senate Appropriations Committee staff. It appears that this year’s budget process will look a lot like last year’s. Three PA Students Show They Have the “Write Stuff” The winners of the 2011 PAEA/JAAPA Student Writing Competition were honored at an awards ceremony held on June 2 during the AAPA Annual Conference in Las Vegas. The competition, sponsored by the Journal of the American Academy of Physician Assistants (JAAPA) for the 11th consecutive year, gives PA students an opportunity to showcase their medical writing skills. More > Project Access: Getting the Word Out in Las Vegas As the United States moves closer to becoming a nation of minorities, the greater the demand will be for a more diverse field of health care providers. Project Access, a joint effort by AAPA and PAEA to inspire and encourage minority young people to consider a PA career, helps fill this crucial health care practitioner gap.
