Frequently Asked Questions

Do programs get to see their incomplete applications? Programs have access to applicant information through the admissions portal. Incomplete applications could be listed as Applicants e-submitted, unverified or applicants verified, not yet mailed. Programs can look at the "Standing at CASPA" section of each applicant to see if transcripts and references have been received.

Does CASPA offer fee waivers? A limited number of fee waivers are available to those who qualify. Applicants who receive a fee waiver can use the waiver toward application to one designated program. Additional program designations are the applicants' financial responsibility. A rough guide to eligibility for a CASPA fee waiver is an annual income with the U.S. Bureau of the Census' low-income range for the size of the family. Applicants must wait to submit their application until a determination of the fee waiver request has been made. Detailed instructions for applying for a fee waiver can be found in the FAQs on the CASPA website.

Does CASPA accept GRE scores? Currently, CASPA does not have an institution code for applicants to have GRE scores sent directly to CASPA. Applicants should send official GRE scores directly to their designated programs. Applicants will also have the opportunity to self report GRE scores on their CASPA application. Please keep in mind that these scores are not official and will not be verified.

Does our program need a supplemental application? If your institution requires information that is not included in the CASPA application or if you wish more program-specific information from an application, you may want to consider adding a supplemental application. It is recommended that the questions asked on the supplemental application not duplicate CASPA questions. Please refer to the Supplemental Application section in this manual for more information.

What does a reapplicant need to do? Can CASPA use their application or transcripts from last year? CASPA is not able to reuse the materials from a previous application cycle. Application materials submitted in a previous application cycle cannot be carried forward to the current cycle. Each year, an applicant needs to complete the current year's application, submit the appropriate processing fee, have transcripts sent from each institution they have attended and three references.

May applicants add more program choices after their application has been submitted? Yes, applicants may add to their initial program designations at any time during the application year, as long as it is before the deadline of any additional programs. To add one or more programs after an application has been e-submitted, applicants need to log back in to the CASPA website, go to the My Programs section and select the program(s) that they wish to add.

May applicants update the information in their records? Do programs receive these updates? Applicants can edit biographic information at any time before and after they have e-submitted their application. Programs have the opportunity to view updated biographic information through the Admissions Portal. Applicants are advised to give any changes such as new or completed coursework directly to their designated programs.

How does CASPA evaluate repeated coursework? CASPA does not recognized repeated coursework. If an applicant repeats a course for grade improvement, CASPA will include both the first course grade and the repeated course grade into the GPA. Participating programs that have a policy to replace repeated course grades should recalculate the GPA once the application is received.

Does CASPA accept Committee Letters of Reference? Yes, CASPA will accept Committee Letters of Reference. To do so, a committee Letter of Reference needs to be completed using a paper reference rather than electronic. A complete paper reference consists of the two-page CASPA Reference Request Form plus a letter submitted on the stationery of the individual writing the reference.

If the Committee Letter of Reference is a compilation of several individuals and contains one Reference Request Form and one letter, it will be considered as one reference. The individual writing the reference will need to fill out the evaluation grid on the Reference Request Form. You will need to obtain two additional references.

If you want the Committee Letter to count as more than one reference, you will need to have a Reference Request Form and a letter for each additional reference that will be in the Committee Letter packet. Each evaluation grid on the Reference Request Form will need to be completed by each individual. You should indicate each reference name in the Reference section of your application. Normally, these letters would be gathered by an advisor and sent together with a cover letter from the advisor.

How do programs' published materials need to change with CASPA? The main change is to let applicants know how to access CASPA information and an application. Applicants would also need to know about any change in program deadline.

Are there opportunities for program input to CASPA? CASPA began with program input and continues to need it. The CASPA advisory committee plans to survey all participating programs and applicants yearly for feedback on the CASPA service.

Will CASPA evolve? The goal is to have a service that will be useful for all programs. Although there may be some changes that can't be made for some programs, CASPA will work with programs to be as flexible as possible with individual needs. Minor changes are made throughout the year. Major ones are considered once a year in early winter and are implemented between application years. Given the success of central services over the years with the major health professions, CASPA is certain that most issues can be either anticipated or addressed as they arise.
