New Summer Opportunity for PA Students in Rural Health
Application deadline is May 16
The American Medical Student Association/Foundation (AMSA) has announced the inaugural Rural Health Scholars program, “The Rural Health Challenge: Unique Needs and Opportunities,” which is open to medical, dental, nurse practitioner, and PA students. The University of Iowa will host this summer's program from June 23-27. AMSA has asked PAEA to distribute this announcement to PA faculty and request that they pass it on to students who may be interested. Note that students must be nominated by deans.
The purpose of this weeklong, innovative institute is to educate students about current issues in rural health, develop leadership skills for future practitioners, and engage students in curricular reform and health policy issues. In addition to providing an interdisciplinary training experience, the program is designed to address a number of rural health issues and topics, including agricultural and occupational health and safety, health care workforce development, migrant farm workers' health needs, rural disaster management, delivery systems in rural America, and demographics of rural America.
Twenty students will be selected to participate in the program. Students do not have to be AMSA members to participate.
Program and application information can be found at www.amsa.org/meded/ruralhealth.cfm. All applications are due Friday, May 16. For more information, please contact Angelia Bowman at abowman@amsa.org or (703) 620-6600 ext. 216.
