PROGRAM DIRECTOR

The Pennsylvania College of Optometry (PCO), the future Pennsylvania University of Health Sciences,* is establishing a distinctive physician assistant (PA) program to be based at its Elkins Park campus. The first class is expected to matriculate in fall 2007. The college is seeking an energetic, dynamic, forward-thinking program director to organize and lead this exciting new endeavor. The position is a 12-month, full-time position, and the program director will be eligible for a tenure-track faculty position (rank will be based on credentials). The program director will determine the nature and design of the program and hire the faculty and staff. A qualified applicant will be a graduate of an accredited PA program (master’s degree required; MPH, additional master’s degree, or PhD preferred) with at least two years’ experience as a clinically practicing PA, hold current NCCPA certification, and be eligible for licensure in Pennsylvania.

From its establishment in 1919 through today, PCO has been known for its leadership in optometric education. Over the past 20 years, that vision has led to the establishment of other health and rehabilitation programs, including four graduate degrees and several certificates in vision impairment, a master of science in clinical optometry for international ophthalmic practitioners, and a distance education and residential doctor of audiology degree. Today, the PCO community includes more than 9,000 audiology, optometry, graduate studies, and international students, and faculty and alumni from the United States and around the globe. The college is accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education as well as relevant professional accreditation bodies. The mission of the college is to “educate health care professionals and educators, conduct research, and provide patient care and rehabilitation services that advance the welfare of the public worldwide.” Our state-of-the art academic, research, and student facilities are situated on a beautifully landscaped campus in Elkins Park, a suburb outside the city of Philadelphia. The college’s primary clinical facility is located in the Oak Lane section of Philadelphia.

The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse–Gundersen Lutheran–Mayo Physician Assistant Program is seeking a dynamic assistant/associate professor (tenure-track) or assistant/associate clinical professor (non-tenure-track), based on credentials, to lead a multi-faceted, collaborative physician assistant program faculty. This is a 9-month position in an established program that enjoys a history of small class sizes and 100% PANCE pass rates, with scores consistently in the top 10 percent nationally. The Physician Assistant Master’s Degree Program consists of four core faculty members, with instruction also delivered and supplemented by local and regional experts from the Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center and The Mayo Foundation.

The PA program is part of the UW-L Department of Health Professions. All programs in the Department of Health Professions, College of Science and Allied Health (SAH) are fully accredited. The Department of Health Professions is located in a $27 million state-of-the-art health science center, which also houses six associate health professional programs. The health science center was built by the La Crosse Medical Health Science Consortium, a collaborative entity of five La Crosse organizations: UW-L, Viterbo University, Western Wisconsin Technical College, Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center, and Franciscan Skemp Health Care–Mayo Health System.

The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse, founded in 1909, is one of 13 four-year campuses in the University of Wisconsin system. It offers approximately 80 majors, minors, and special programs for undergraduates in business, education, the sciences, the arts, health science, recreation, physical education, and liberal studies. Twenty-one graduate programs are available. About 9,300 students attend classes on the compact, 119-acre campus.

La Crosse (pop. 52,000) is set among scenic bluffs along the winding Mississippi River on the Minnesota/Wisconsin border. Located approximately 2 ½ hours from Minneapolis to the northwest and Madison, Wisconsin, to the southeast, La Crosse enjoys small-town charm with larger city benefits. Densely-wooded coulees, three rivers, and lush marshland provide prime locales for many outdoor pursuits. In addition to UW-L, La Crosse is home to Viterbo University and Western Wisconsin Technical College.

Requirements: Minimum of master’s degree in related field; a doctoral degree is preferred (MD, DO, or PhD); current national certification as a physician assistant or licensed physician; established history of teaching; proven leadership skills; good communication, negotiation, and interpersonal skills; fiscal and organizational experience; evidence of a progressive, collaborative management style; and willingness to participate in a multi-institutional program.

ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR
York College, New York

York College PA Program is seeking candidates for the position of associate director. This is a 12-month renewable, non-tenure track position that involves annual re-appointment at an assistant/associate professor rank, commensurate with experience and qualifications.

York College is part of the City University of New York and is located in a diverse, residential neighborhood in Queens. We are seeking a motivated and dynamic individual to join our dedicated faculty in maintaining a congenial and supportive environment.

The associate director will work directly with the program director in providing leadership and effective administration of the program. This includes oversight of the academic and clinical functions of the program, programs review, and service on program committees. This role also includes involvement in admission, retention and recruitment, and various responsibilities as delegated by the program director. Other functions include service on college-wide committees and classroom teaching.

Requirements: Completion of an accredited PA program and a master’s degree. NCCPA accreditation and New York licensure are required. Three years’ experience in PA education and two years’ clinical experience are preferred.

Physicians with knowledge of PA education will be considered. An earned doctorate in a health related field is preferred.

CLINICAL COORDINATOR

FACULTY POSITION
Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine

The Department of Physician Assistant Studies at Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine is now accepting applications for a full-time (12-month) faculty position starting July 1, 2006. Applicants should be prepared to teach graduate courses in the 26-month master’s degree physician assistant program. This position includes teaching and administration in both the academic and clinical phases and assisting with management of clinical training sites. Other duties will include advising and evaluating the educational performance of PA students. The successful candidate will have an appropriate college degree and hold current NCCPA certification. This position requires proven written and verbal skills, computer competency, and experience in using instructional technology. All faculty members share teaching, publishing, admissions, and accreditation responsibilities.

Requirements: PA-C is required. Candidates must have at least two years of clinical experience and be willing to travel (less than 10% time). Bachelor’s degree candidates willing to pursue an advanced degree will be considered. Master’s degree is preferred.
