PAEA Events and Booth at AAPA Annual Conference Highlight Precepting Issues

A More Visible Presence for PAEA at San Diego PA Conference

Following PAEA’s relatively low profile at last year’s Annual PA Conference, members of PAEA and its board of directors will be more visible at AAPA's 37th Annual PA Conference in San Diego in May. The full board will meet formally during the conference and attend a number of AAPA events. PAEA President Justine Strand will make the traditional address to the House of Delegates. And, as always, many PA faculty will be involved with the HOD, alumni events, and other activities.

Building on last year’s success in reaching out to prospective preceptors, PAEA has lined up several events on the same topic. Developed by the PAEA Education Committee and the board’s Preceptor Workgroup, a number of events — including presentations, networking opportunities, exhibits, and panel discussions — will be available to the educational and clinical PAs attending the conference.

Presentations
The Education Committee plans four presentations, one to presented twice, on Sunday, May 24:

  • Paying It Forward: The Benefits, Barriers, and Balance of Clinical Precepting (11:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m.)
  • The Perfect Storm: Casting a Safety Net Around Medical Errors
    (9:00 a.m.)
  • The Year in Review: PA Research Literature (10:00 a.m.)
  • Educational Implications of Health Workforce Issues for PAs
    (1:00 p.m.)

Each of these sessions has been approved for one hour of Category I CME by AAPA. Presenters will be PAEA members considered experts in their fields or whose sessions on these topics have previously received favorable evaluations. Presentations will be held in room 25AB of the San Diego Convention Center. All sessions will be listed in the AAPA Conference Program.

Panel Presentation
A session entitled “PAs, Preceptors, and the Health Workforce Shortage” is being presented that includes clinical PAs and faculty. Topics will include clinical training and workforce issues, barriers to precepting, the joys of clinical teaching, future efforts to match programs with preceptors, and tools and resources for preceptors. Everyone is welcome to attend this event on Wednesday, May 27, from 11:00-11:45 a.m., in room 23C of the convention center.

Preceptor Booth, Number 409
For the second consecutive year, PAEA will host a booth in the conference exhibit hall. Staff, board members, and other volunteer PA educators will be available to speak with PAs about precepting. One of PAEA’s goals is to collect information on individuals interested in being preceptors who would like to be connected with programs near them. The booth, # 409, will be open on Tuesday and Wednesday, May 26 and 27, in the AAPA Exhibit Hall. All PAs and PA faculty, especially those interested in precepting, are invited to stop by and chat.
