In Memoriam: Stephen Bartholomew

Stephen Bartholomew, 55, of Engadine, Michigan, died unexpectedly on Sunday, January 7, 2007. He was director of the University of Detroit Mercy PA Program from 1990-1994.

Born in Detroit on November 29, 1951, Mr. Bartholomew was a graduate of Bishop Foley High School in Madison Heights. He later graduated from Wayne State University with a bachelor of arts in education. Mr. Bartholomew furthered his education at the University of Detroit Mercy, earning a bachelor of science degree with certification as a physician assistant and eventually, a master’s degree in education.

Following his service as a program director at the University of Detroit Mercy, Mr. Bartholomew was a tenured professor at Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo. For several years, he was a practicing PA in Michigan and California and also traveled throughout the world serving in medical missions, primarily in third-world countries.

Mr. Bartholomew was a resident of Engadine, Michigan, for the past four years and worked as a PA in the area. He was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed hiking and traveling, as well as photography, woodworking, reading, and writing. He was a loving husband to the former Caryn Hadley and a father who enjoyed spending his time with his family.

Survivors include his wife, children Breanna Ferriby of Berkley and Michael and Maria of Engadine, and parents Raymond and Margaret Bartholomew of Royal Oak.

A memorial service celebrating Mr. Bartholomew's life was held on January 13, 2007, at the United Methodist Church in Newberry.
