Gerald Merenstein, MD, program and medical director of the Child Health Associate/PA Program at the University of Colorado for 13 years, died peacefully at home on December 14, 2007, after one week of hospice care.

Dr. Merenstein was born on February 14, 1941, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He trained at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and in 1966 moved to Denver, where he began his medical career at Fitzsimons Army Medical Center. He retired from the U.S. Army in 1986 at the rank of colonel. Following his retirement from the service, he joined the faculty of the University of Colorado as a neonatologist. He served as acting chair of the Department of Pediatrics at the Children's Hospital, as the senior associate dean of education in the School of Medicine, and director of the Child Health Associate/PA Program. He recently received the highest award given by the American Academy of Pediatrics for an educator in the field of neonatal medicine.

Dr. Merenstein is survived by his wife, Bonnie, and a sister and brother. He was the father of three children and had nine grandchildren.

Interim director Anita Glicken said, "We have not only lost a colleague and friend, but the PA profession has lost a champion, educator, and mentor."

A service was held on Sunday, December 16, at Rodef Shalom in Denver.
