The South College School of Physician Assistant (PA) Studies in Knoxville, Tennessee, is currently seeking an outstanding faculty candidate to join its team of experienced educators. This is a full time (12-month appointment) with weekly clinical release time and presents a rare opportunity for faculty to be involved in a lifelong learning educational track for PAs. We focus on our core faculty team, a close knit group of educators striving for excellence. The successful candidate will have demonstrated organizational skills and previous experience in an academic setting as an adjunct faculty member. Responsibilities include:

  1. Assisting with the implementation of didactic and clinical course work for the PA program

  2. Assisting a variety of adjunct faculty with informed clinical expertise, humanistic attitudes, and the ability to master clinical learning, both in the classroom and the clinical learning site

  3. Teaching, mentoring, and developing scholarly activities for students and self

  4. Marketing school to health care community by assisting with clinical visits

  5. Maintaining scholarly activities through an active professional development program

  6. Taking the opportunity to have release time for clinical work or research

  7. Assisting with didactic course coordination, lecturing, clinical lab instruction, student recruitment, committee participation, student advising, quality-assessment activities, and other administrative duties; assisting with high fidelity simulation laboratory

  8. Sharing ongoing clinical site development with core faculty by assisting with student assignment, coordination of clinical faculty, student site visitation, interfacing with clinical preceptors, student advising, and general supervision of the learning experience at clinical sites

Faculty Qualifications:

  1. A minimum of 2-3 years’ clinical experience, current NCCPA certification, and ability to be a licensed provider in Tennessee

  2. A history of clinical teaching or academic instruction as an adjunct or core faculty member

  3. A minimum of a academic graduate degree in a health sciences area, higher education, or a related field of study

  4. Documented strong written and oral communication skills and advanced computer skills, especially in Power Point and the use of PDAs

  5. A strong sense of humor, organizational capacity, and the ability to work well in a team environment and learn from experienced faculty

The Jefferson College of Health Sciences has an immediate opening for a full-time faculty member. The program has expanded its class size from 30 to 40 students and is moving to the master’s degree. The new position will help facilitate this transition. The ideal candidate will have experience in physician assistant (PA) education, clinical practice, and scholarly activities. We will consider candidates with no teaching experience, provided they have precepted PA students in the past. We look for individuals who function well in a team environment. As a member of the core faculty, the responsibilities will include but will not be limited to teaching, small group instruction, planning, evaluation of student progress, and admissions. A major focus of this position will be the development and implementation of our graduate-level educational program.

Qualifications include current NCCPA certification, licensure or eligibility for Virginia licensure, and clinical/teaching experience, as indicated above. Applicants should possess excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal skills. Applicants should have a master’s degree; a doctoral degree or significant work on a doctoral degree is preferred.

Faculty rank at the level of assistant or associate professor will be conferred commensurate with qualifications. The position allows for one day of clinical/research/advanced education a week.

As instructional academic staff appointments, both positions are eligible for career promotion and progression.

Clinical Education Coordinator (Position A)

Responsibilities include oversight of the clinical education phase of the program, including:

  • Coordination with Mayo and Gundersen Lutheran medical education coordinators
  • Scheduling and evaluation of clinical training sites
  • Evaluation of student learning and progress
  • Clinical preceptor faculty development and support
  • Monitoring and maintaining the record-keeping systems for clinical rotations
  • Clinical curricular revisions and development
  • Updating and revision of learning objectives, written exams, and student evaluation methods
  • Recruitment of new clinical training sites with an open mind toward expansion of the program
  • Advising students through PA educational process
  • Classroom instruction within the preclinical year
  • Participation in all aspects of student education, curricular redesign, and maintenance of program accreditation
  • Active engagement as vital member of team-oriented faculty


Assistant/Associate Clinical Professor (Position B)

Responsibilities include student instruction and evaluation, primarily in the preclinical phase of the program, including:

  • Classroom instruction as both lead teacher and adjunct instructor as determined by program director
  • Evaluation of student learning and progress
  • Advising students through PA educational process
  • Participation in the student recruitment, selection, and admission processes
  • Participation in all aspects of student evaluation, curricular redesign, and maintenance of program accreditation
  • Active engagement as vital member of team-oriented faculty


Candidates must hold either current NCCPA certification and be eligible for Wisconsin State licensure or possess an advanced medical degree (i.e., MD/DO). At a minimum, candidates must hold a bachelor’s degree and have completed at least one full year of clinical practice by the start date. Both positions require frequent and professional interaction with health care administrators, physicians, educators, and administrative personnel. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills are essential. Prior teaching and clinical experience will enhance the candidate’s application, though all interested parties with a demonstrated interest and willingness to teach are invited to apply.

The UW-L – Gundersen – Mayo PA Program is a tri-partnership with the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse, Gundersen Lutheran Medical Foundation, and the Mayo School of Health Related Sciences. The program is an accredited 24-month, master’s degree PA program.
