Call for Nominations for 2008 PAEA Faculty Awards
The Nominations and Awards Committee invites nominations for the annual PAEA Faculty Awards. Help the Association to honor those who make significant contributions to PAEA and the profession by nominating colleagues and programs that have had a positive impact on PA education. All nominations are due in the PAEA national office by June 30. Winners will be selected by the Nominations and Awards Committee after consideration of all submissions. Recipients will be announced and prizes awarded at the 2008 PAEA Annual Education Forum in Savannah. Award recipients will be notified in advance of the meeting and will asked to provide several photographs for the awards luncheon.
Nominations are invited for the following awards:
New Faculty Award for Professional Excellence
Excellence through Diversity Award
General Nominating Procedures
New this year! Nominations for some awards may now be made not only by program and medical directors but also by PA program academic administrators. Nomination letters are required for each award and are in addition to letters of support. Letters of support should be written by colleagues, peers, supervisors, or other individuals inside or outside of PA education who have themselves been recognized for their achievements in the area for which the nomination is being made and can vouch for the candidate's qualifications, achievements, and performance. Student letters are discouraged. Nominations for all awards must be submitted electronically, and letters may be submitted separately. See each award’s specific criteria.
Nominations and related material must arrive at the national office no later than June 30. Please send submissions to Eileen Evans at eevans@PAEAonline.org. All submissions will be acknowledged. If you do not receive a confirmation within three business days, please call (703) 548-5538, ext. 307, to be certain that material was received.
NEW FACULTY AWARD FOR PROFESSIONAL EXCELLENCE
This award recognizes a program faculty or staff member who has made noteworthy contributions to PA education in one or more of the following areas:
Teaching (e.g., classroom and/or laboratory instruction, course development)
Administration (e.g., general administration, committee service, planning, development, and evaluation activities)
Scholarship (grant writing, research, publications, presentations, and other scholarly or creative activities)
Service (liaison with professional organization, clinical professional activities, promotion of the PA profession)
Requirements
Candidates must have been employed at least half-time (0.5 FTE) in a member program for three years or less at the time of nomination.
Candidates may be nominated by the PA program's director, medical director, or academic administrators.
Nominations for this award must be accompanied by a complete CV.
A maximum of two supporting letters must be submitted.
The recipient of this award will receive a $500 check and a commemorative plaque.
This award recognizes a program faculty member who has earned the respect of students and colleagues for his or her devotion to or overall skill in education, as represented by increasing contributions to PA education in one or more of the following areas:
Teaching (development of a meritorious record of excellence in classroom and/or clinical teaching)
Outstanding research or other creative activities (grant writing, publications, presentations, development of new educational avenues or teaching approaches)
Administration (administrative accomplishments demonstrating breadth and depth of knowledge of PA education or program’s mission)
Peer recognition as demonstrated by scholarship and/or professional service (liaison with professional organization(s), clinical professional activities, promotion of the PA profession)
Requirements
Candidates must have been employed at least half-time (0.5 FTE) in a member program for at least three but no more than seven years at the time of nomination.
Candidates may be nominated by the PA program's director, medical director, or academic administrators.
Nomination letter must address how eligibility criteria were met.
Nominations for this award must be accompanied by a complete CV.
A maximum of two supporting letters must be submitted.
The recipient of this award will receive a $500 check and a commemorative plaque.
Through this award the Association honors faculty who inspire, stimulate, and challenge their students and colleagues through outstanding contributions to PA education and the profession. Candidates must demonstrate outstanding contributions in a minimum of three of the following areas:
Teaching (develops innovative teaching methods that encourage students’ active and continuous learning, fosters critical thinking and challenges students, demonstrates commitment to students’ continuous improvement and professional growth)
Scholarship (makes significant contributions to the advancement of knowledge, understanding, problem solving, and pedagogy as evidenced through publications, presentations, grants, research or other creative activities; serves as a mentor to other colleagues; fosters faculty development)
Administration (exemplifies administrative effectiveness and demonstrates accomplishments that enhance the program’s mission; demonstrates visionary leadership that enhances the program or profession within candidate's institution or community)
Professional service (serves in leadership roles in professional organizations or the community; engages in activities that advance the profession and promote public health education)
Requirements
Candidates must have a minimum of seven years’ cumulative experience in one or more PAEA member programs at the time of nomination
Candidates may be nominated by the PA program's director, medical director, or academic administrators.
Nominations for this award must be accompanied by a complete CV.
The letter of nomination must identify the three areas (teaching, scholarship, administration, or professional service) in which the candidate excels and address the key reasons for the nomination.
Two letters of support must be submitted.
The recipient of this award will receive a $500 check and a plaque.
This award honors an individual who has provided sustained, exceptional service or leadership to PAEA, or who has contributed to the advancement of the PA profession in other ways, e.g., through scholarly activity, teaching, or as an advocate for the profession in the public and private arenas. The nominee may or may not be directly associated with a PA program.
Requirements
Anyone may nominate a candidate for this award.
The letter of nomination must address the key reasons for the nomination.
Two letters of support must be submitted.
Nominations for this award must be accompanied by a complete CV.
The recipient of this award will receive a clock and a commemorative plaque.
This award honors an individual or institution outside of formal PA program circles, e.g., a preceptor or local organization that has made an outstanding contribution to excellence in PA education.
Requirements
Anyone may nominate a candidate for this award.
A maximum of two letters of support, in addition to the nomination letter, must be sent for each nomination.
The recipient of this award will receive a commemorative plaque.
This award provides recognition for research and scholarly work relating to PA education. The award will go to either
An individual who has a distinguished record of scholarly contributions to PA education over many years
An individual who has authored a recent seminal work of importance to PA educators
Requirements
Anyone may nominate a candidate for this award.
The letter of nomination must outline the candidate’s accomplishments. In the case of a single effort, a letter noting the research effort of significance must be accompanied by a copy of the published work.
A maximum of two letters of support must be submitted.
Nominations for this award must be accompanied by a complete CV.
The recipient of this award will receive a $500 check and a commemorative sculpture.
EXCELLENCE THROUGH DIVERSITY AWARD
The recipient of this award will be determined by the PAEA Nomination and Awards Committee with input from the Committee on Ethnic and Cultural Diversity. Preference may be given to those candidates whose work on diversity has not been recognized previously by similar awards.
The award recognizes the outstanding commitment and achievements of a PAEA member program in its implementation of specific strategies and activities designed to foster the diversity of program faculty, staff, and student body. This award will be based on the program’s demonstration of the following:
Diversity among program faculty, staff, and student body
Successful outreach to and recruitment from diverse and underserved populations
Development and implementation of diversity training and educational experiences for faculty and students
Research and scholarship pertaining to diversity and the inclusion process
Leadership and advocacy in the areas of diversity
Requirements
Candidates may be nominated by the PA program's director, medical director, or academic administrators. (For this award, in the event that a person nominates a program with which he or she is not affiliated, a letter of support that originates from the nominated program’s director or his designee must also be submitted.)
A single nomination letter should be submitted clearly describing the program’s qualifications as they pertain to diversity and the resulting contributions to PAEA and the PA profession.
No letters of support are necessary.
• The program must have been accredited for the five years preceding its nomination.
• The program must be a PAEA member at the time of nomination.
• The program should have averaged 90% underrepresented minority retention over the previous five years.
• Faculty must have demonstrated commitment to service and recruitment of underrepresented/disadvantaged populations to the PA profession through formalized, regular outreach programs.
The recipient program will receive a $500 check and a commemorative plaque.
