The PAEA Faculty Development Institute invites faculty in all roles of PA education to attend a new workshop on academic law to be held at the Hilton Chicago O’Hare Airport on April 11 and 12. The workshop will feature Patricia Bergeson, an attorney experienced in university judicial affairs, whom members will recognize as the feature editor for the Academic Law column in the Journal of Physician Assistant Education. Bergeson, who is very familiar with PA education, was a presenter during the PAEA Annual Education Forum in Tucson and, in response to requests from faculty to learn more about legal issues, PAEA has invited her to deliver this seminar. Patrick Knott will moderate this workshop.

The following topics will be addressed:

• Students with disabilities
• Academic integrity
• Documentation to dismiss students for cheating
• Documentation of behavioral and professional issues
• Disclosure of past academic performance to future clinical preceptors
• Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA)

 

Although no specific legal advice will be offered during this workshop, participants may share experiences and review the relevant legal perspectives of related situations. Participants will find that they are better prepared to handle legal issues within their individual programs after attending this workshop.

Participants must commit to attending the workshop for the entire two days. The registration fee of $375 includes breakfast, lunch, and snacks for both days. The guest room rate at the Hilton Chicago O’Hare Airport is $149 per night, single occupancy. Attendees are responsible for making their own travel and hotel arrangements. Travel arrangements should not be made until confirmation of workshop registration is received.
