Competition Rules and Guidelines
The APAP Research Institute (RI) is announcing the 2005-6 cycle of the Student Writing Competition, which provides an opportunity for PA students to submit original entries that feature their medical writing skills on clinical topics. Formerly known as the J. Peter Nyquist Student Writing Contest, the contest was renamed the APAP Student Writing Competition several years ago. To memorialize early contributions in support of student writing made by Mr. Nyquist, the student taking first place continues to be designated the J. Peter Nyquist Award winner. The Journal of the American Academy of Physician Assistants (JAAPA) will sponsor the competition for a fifth consecutive year with a generous donation of $6,000. The first-place winner will receive $500; the student placing second will receive $300; and the third, $200. Winners will be invited to present their entries during APAPs Semiannual Meeting in San Francisco, California, from May 26-28, 2006. In addition to monetary prizes, winners meeting registration, travel, and lodging expenses will be covered. Theresa Hegmann is chair of the APAP Research Institute subcommittee overseeing administration of the contest. APAP staff will assume responsibility for receiving student entries and assigning reviewers. Student papers that meet the eligibility criteria will be reviewed in a blinded process by at least two different volunteer faculty members from programs across the country. (Faculty will not be assigned to review papers by students in their own programs.) Once the field is narrowed to a group of finalists, the RI subcommittee will choose the top three entries. All submissions in this years contest must be electronic. Program directors are asked to e-mail an endorsement from their own e-mail accounts to accompany each entry sent by students in their programs. Endorsements should verify that the entry is the students original work and that the paper was authored by the entrant while he or she was a student in the PA program. Submissions will not be considered complete until the program directors endorsement has been received at APAP headquarters. All student entries, as well as program directors endorsements, must be received by February 15, 2006. It is requested that faculty read the Faculty Announcement and forward Competition Rules and Guidelines and Suggestions to Help Students Get Started to their students. All submissions should be sent to Eileen Evans, Administrator Reviewers Invited The committee is seeking reviewers for the submissions in February. Anyone who wishes to serve as a reviewer or who has questions about the competition should contact Theresa Hegmann at theresa-hegmann@uiowa.edu or APAP staff at 703/836-2272, ext. 3415.
