MEMBERSHIP MATTERS The AAPA Membership Matters column, written by the AAPA staff, features the latest information about new, enhanced, and planned AAPA member benefits, services, and products for you and your students. AAPA wants to help you make the academic years more productive and rewarding for your students. Please make them aware of these resources. The PA Profession Needs Your Help! Join forces with your colleagues from across the country at the AAPAs inaugural Adventures in Lobbying: A Day on Capitol Hill, to be held February 6-7, 2006, in Washington, D.C. You and your PA students are particularly encouraged to attend, as this event offers an invaluable first-hand learning experience in professional practice and health care policy development. Adventures in Lobbying offers a golden opportunity for PA program faculty and students to discuss with members of Congress the importance of restoring federal funding for the Public Health Service Acts Title VII Health Professions Program. The program is the only federal funding available to PA educational programs and is essential to the development and training of the nations health workforce. It is also critical to providing continued health services to the underserved and minority communities. Unfortunately, the continued existence of this safety net program is threatened. Other hot issues that will be addressed during this timely event are:
The adventure will begin on Monday afternoon with a workshop that will help you to become an effective grassroots lobbyist and advocate for your patients. Experts will guide you through a mock visit to a congressional office and give you pointers on how to have a meaningful conversation with elected officials and congressional staff members. Tuesday is reserved for participants to visit the offices of their U.S. senators and representatives. When you register for Adventures in Lobbying, you will receive guidelines for making these appointments in advance. Capitol Hill is a short trip from the conference hotel. You will be also be given Metro fare cards to facilitate travel to and from the U.S. Capitol on Tuesday. Monday and Tuesday evenings will feature receptions, offering you a chance to mingle with your colleagues and share your adventures. Make plans now for a trip to your nations capital in early February. There is no registration fee for this event.
