Update on APAP’s International Activities

The Association of Physician Assistant Programs’ International Affairs Committee (IAC) held its fourth meeting on November 2, 2005, during the APAP Education Forum in Puerto Rico, to discuss international issues relating to physician assistants. As part its activities last year, the committee

Monitored and reviewed international medical education organizations
  Updated resource document matrix describing the IAC, its mission and value to APAP, recommendations made, and actions taken
Made presentations at the following organizations:
  American Academy of Family Practice (AAFP) International Consultants’ Workshop in Portland, Maine, in September
  AAPA International Symposium in Orlando in May
  Global Health Education Consortium (GHEC) in San Francisco in March
  Poster presentation on the global applicability of physician assistants at Association of Medical Educators of Europe and APAP meetings
Sponsored the International Rotations Workshop at the APAP Education Forum in Las Croabas, Puerto Rico, in November
Participated in the Society of Teachers of Family Medicine through the international group electronic discussion list
Completed surveys, to be repeated in 2006, on the international experiences of APAP faculty and on students’ international rotations
Developed/updated the following resource documents
  International Resources for APAP, which provides general information, as well as information on rotations, language programs, and professional organizations
  Guidelines for International Rotations
  Checklist for Rotations
  International Rotations Survey Summary 2005
  Faculty International Experience Survey Summary 2005
  Sample Liability Waiver
Had its chair selected as editor of “Global Perspectives” feature in APAP journal Perspective on Physician Assistant Education
Presented global health-oriented conference activities
  APAP 2005 Education Forum and AAFP International Consultants meeting: viewing of film “Shake Hands with the Devil” about Rwandan genocide
  APAP 2005 Educational Forum: “Tsunami of Tears — 2005 Relief Effort in Southern Thailand”
Participated in conference calls with AAPA Physician Assistants for Global Health
Supported the formation of a SAAAPA international committee and encouraged the following activities
  Resource sharing
  Participation of student member on IAC
  Offered IAC-sponsored presentation to SAAAPA for 2006 AAPA Annual Conference
The committee is in the process of
  Developing a new IAC Web page that will include international documents and presentations related to global health
  Recommending a member for consideration for the board of the Global Health Education Consortium, in response to their invitation and following an informal liaison relationship with them of several years’ duration
