APAP Student Writing Contest

First Place Award to Memorialize J. Peter Nyquist

Announcement to Faculty | Competition Rules and Guidelines

APAP is pleased to announce the Student Writing Contest for the 2003–4 cycle. Announcements were sent to all APAP member program faculty who were requested to forward the contest guidelines to their students. Faculty are urged to encourage their students to enter the contest.

Formerly known as the J. Peter Nyquist Student Writing Competition, the contest was recently renamed the APAP Student Writing Competition. The first place award is designated the J. Peter Nyquist award to memorialize early contributions in support of student writing made by Mr. Nyquist.

The Journal of the American Academy of Physician Assistants (JAAPA) is sponsoring the competition for a fourth consecutive year with a generous donation of $6,000. The first place award is $500; second place, $300; and the third, $200. Winners will be invited to present their work during APAP’s Semiannual Meeting in Las Vegas, Nevada, from May 31 through June 2, 2004, and their registration and lodging expenses will also be covered.

Again this year, I. Keir Todd, a faculty person from the Oregon Health and Science University PA Program, will facilitate the competition. Mr. Todd will manage the process of receiving student entries, assigning reviewers, and selecting the winners.

A few changes have been adopted for this year’s contest. All submissions must be electronic MS files, no longer than 4,000 words in length, (not including title page, abstract, legends, tables, figures, text, and references). Program directors are asked to e-mail their endorsement letters from their own e-mail accounts. All entries, as well as program directors’ endorsements, must be received by February 2, 2004. For complete information, please access Competition Rules and Guidelines at the link above. All submissions should be sent electronically to

Mr. Todd welcomes reviewers for the submissions in February. Anyone with questions about the contest, as well as those who wish to serve as reviewers, may contact him, nyquist@ohsu.edu or 503/494-0843.
