ARC-PA Encourages PA Programs to Complete the AMA’s Annual Survey

John McCarty, executive director of the ARC-PA, requests that APAP encourage its member programs to respond to the American Medical Association (AMA) Annual Survey of Health Professions, posted on-line at http://www.ama-assn.org/go/hpsurvey. The AMA survey has met with a favorable response from many respondents, and its format has allowed them to collect racial/ethnic data once again (this was discontinued in 1995). Their current response rate is about 20 percent, or 1,200 out of 5,510 programs.

Program directors who have questions about completing the survey are asked to direct them to

Scholarships for Disadvantaged Students

The FY 2003-04 Scholarships for Disadvantaged Students (SDS) Application will be available on November 1, 2002, with a due date of December 17, 2002. The checklist for completing the application is available at http://bhpr.hrsa.gov/dsa/weblinks. Click on “Program Application” and select “SDS Checklist.”

Possible Changes in Funding: Depending on SDS funding availability in FY 2003, the Department may require a school to meet at least one of the funding priorities listed below, in addition to the current eligibility criteria, to receive funding for FY 2003-2004. Please note that since this change is only a possibility, we encourage all schools to apply, regardless of meeting the funding priorities.

Funding Priorities: A school/program is given funding priority based on the following:

  1. At least 50 percent of graduates practicing in primary care during FY 2001-2002 (for allopathic and osteopathic medicine, use graduates from FY 1997-98; for dentistry, graduate nursing, and physician assistants, use graduates from FY 2000-2001); note that priority in primary care is limited to allopathic and osteopathic medicine, dentistry, graduate nursing, and physician assistants;
  2. Percentage of underrepresented, minority, full-time students enrolled during FY 2001-2002 was above the national average for the discipline;
  3. At least 10 percent of graduates practicing in medically underserved communities during 2001-2002 (for allopathic and osteopathic medicine, use graduates from FY 1997-1998; for all other disciplines, use graduates from FY 2000-2001).

Current Eligibility Criteria: Your school/program must have a program for recruiting and retaining disadvantaged students and meet the SDS eligibility criteria described below. Students from disadvantaged backgrounds must comprise the following:

  1. At least 10 percent of the total enrollment (full-time students) of your program (e.g., dentistry, baccalaureate nursing) during FY 2001-2002 (7/1/01-6/30/02);
  2. At least 10 percent of the total graduates (who were full-time students) of your program during FY 2001-2002 (7/1/01-6/30/02). In addition, to be eligible to receive SDS funding, a school must have economically disadvantaged students enrolled and graduated during FY 2001-02.
