Perri Morgan Awarded Physician Assistant Foundation’s Breitman-Dorn Research Fellowship

Perri Morgan, faculty member and director of research in the Duke University PA Division and APAP’s representative to the Title VII Advisory Committee on Training in Primary Care Medicine and Dentistry, was recently awarded the Physician Assistant Foundation’s Breitman-Dorn Research Fellowship. Recipients of the award must be doctoral students whose research on their dissertation is in progress. The research must in some way advance the role or contributions of PAs in health care.

Currently a PhD candidate in the Department of Population Health Sciences at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Morgan has been a PA educator for more than eleven years and has been working on her doctorate for five. Her dissertation topic is “Practice Pattern Changes and Practice Outcomes of Physician Assistants in Office-based Medical Care, 1996–2002.”

Ms. Morgan has an extensive background in educational, clinical, and research activities. Prior to joining Duke in 2005, she served from 1994–2004 as a faculty member at the University of Wisconsin-Madison PA program, where she co-authored and implemented two Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) Title VII Primary Care Training grants. In the second of these, she coordinated medical informatics education for students, faculty, and preceptors. This training was designed to reduce the professional isolation of clinicians practicing in medically underserved areas. As director of research in the Duke PA division, Morgan will promote research regarding the effects of PAs on access, quality, cost, and utilization of health care.

AAPA’s 2006 Annual Conference Provides Opportunity for Faculty to Present Scholarly Work

The APAP Education Committee reminds faculty that the AAPA is soliciting proposals for presentation at its 2006 Annual Conference in San Francisco. Significant numbers of APAP faculty and staff are included among those selected to present each year by the AAPA. However, many APAP members may not have considered this opportunity to present scholarly work. The proposal submission form is available at http://www.aapa.org/annual-conf/orlando05/callforpresentations06.pdf, and the submission deadline is September 19.

Proposals may be submitted in a wide range of categories, some therapeutic, and others overlapping with PA program focus areas, such as education or research. Faculty who have recently prepared presentations or papers may wish to submit a proposal in the appropriate category.
