“The Graduate-Level Faculty Member’s Toolbox: Skills for Successful Teaching at the Graduate Level” Workshop

November 3, 2004

[Registration Form

APAP cordially invites you to attend the Research Institute workshop, “The Graduate-Level Faculty Member’s Toolbox: Skills for Successful Teaching at the Graduate Level,” to be held on Wednesday, November 3, 2004, during the Education Forum in Nashville, Tennessee. This is an add-on workshop, requiring separate registration in addition to that for the Education Forum.

This workshop is designed to provide APAP faculty members with the opportunity to develop the knowledge and skills to succeed as faculty researchers and teachers of a graduate-level curriculum. As programs begin to confer entry-level master's degrees, PA faculty may be challenged by the expectations involving research that are part of graduate-level education. This workshop will provide faculty with a conceptual framework for incorporating research into the educational process, as well as adding to the set of skills necessary for faculty in graduate education. Many helpful nuggets and pearls will be included. In addition there will be an opportunity for individualized advising by nationally known faculty experienced in research and faculty development.

Objectives for this workshop follow:

(1) Participants will differentiate between graduate and undergraduate education in relation to societal, institutional, and professional expectations, as well as those of students.

(2) Participants will identify and discuss faculty development needs and specific aspects of graduate education, including research and types of graduate projects. Topics will also include mentoring graduate students and coordinating graduate projects.

(3) Participants will identify and discuss critical skills, techniques, and scholarly activities to further their own academic careers, such as creating an academic portfolio, understanding promotion and tenure processes, and developing the personal research or scholarly activity agenda that is often an expectation for graduate-level faculty members.

(4) Participants will gain an understanding of the different types of research activities commonly performed by PA faculty and how these might be utilized in student projects or in their own personal research.

Please complete the attached registration form and return it by the October 1, 2004 deadline. Early registration is encouraged. The cost of this workshop is $275 (to be submitted ONLY upon notification of acceptance). Registration fee includes a breakfast and a snack.
