2005 Research Program

Call for Grant Proposals

The APAP Research Institute invites PA faculty to submit proposals to its Research Grants Program, formerly the Small Grants Program. Several grants of up to $5,000 may be awarded. The program is intended to foster research activity on the education and behavior of physician assistants. This may apply to students, characteristics of PA education, or social phenomena that have application to physician assistants. Awards to PA educators will be presented at the 2005 APAP Education Forum in Puerto Rico.

Eligibility Criteria

1. The project must be research oriented. A research question or project should be the focus of the study. The results of the study must have some application to understanding PA activity or education.

2. The research project must be accomplished within 12 months of the award, and a final report on the project must be submitted to the Research Institute. Grant recipients are expected to present the findings of their studies at the APAP Education Forum one year after the conclusion of the project.

3. The principal investigator (PI) must be a faculty member at an accredited PA program and must be employed by the educational institution for a minimum of 20 hours per week for the duration of the project. The PI is responsible for completing the project and submitting the one-year status report to the Research Institute.

4. The grant may cover the cost of equipment, material, and operations, as well as some labor, personnel, or consulting costs. Institutional indirect, administrative, or facilities costs will not be covered by the Research Grants Program. Matching institutional support is encouraged, but is not a criterion. The Research Institute does not support:

  • Indirect or administrative costs
  • Capital improvements, construction, or purchasing costs
  • Endowments
  • General operating expenses
  • Fundraising campaigns
  • Personal expenses for educational advancement
  • Ongoing projects to improve the classroom
  • Travel or other expenses related to the preparation of posters or presentation of findings

Proposal Format Requirements

1. Only seven pages will be accepted and they should be in the format prescribed below.

2. Proposals must be in Microsoft Word 4.0 or higher format (Mac or PC).

3. Proposals must be in 12-point type, with 1.5 line spacing, 1-inch margin left and right, and left justified.

4. Font choices are Times New Roman, Arial, Courier New, or Tahoma.

5. Proposal must be submitted electronically no later than midnight of the due date. Proposals not submitted in electronic format will not be considered.

Pages 3–5 Background or rationale, research question, objectives, methods, evaluation, personnel, etc. (3 pages maximum). The format can be the author’s choice.
Page 6 References (may be single spaced)
Page 7 Budget and timeline to complete the study. Budget should include PI, time commitment, activity, and cost as the first line; each person in the project should be listed in the same manner. The budget may exceed the Research Institute’s $5,000 cap, but the proposal must specify how the additional cost will be covered.

Proposals will be accepted only in the above format.
