Invitation to “Managing Self, Managing Others” Workshop

By Sherry Stolberg, MGPGP, PA-C
Project Leader

Registration Form

APAP, through the Faculty Development Institute (FDI), is once again pleased to offer the “Managing Self, Managing Others,” on May 30–31, 2004, as an add-on workshop two days before the official opening of the APAP Semiannual Meeting in Las Vegas, Nevada. Dawn Morton-Rias and I facilitated this workshop when it was hosted by the Arcadia University PA Program in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Overview: Program directors and other PA faculty frequently identify managing faculty, staff, preceptors, and students as a particularly challenging part of their jobs. The people in our professional lives provide joy and satisfaction, but may also become the source of frustration, worry, and sleepless nights. This intensive, two-day workshop will focus on developing and refining the skills needed for successful management of the self and others in the PA educational setting.

I will facilitate this workshop with Karen Mulitalo, academic coordinator at the University of Texas Southwestern PA Program. Learning strategies will include lecture/presentations, discussion, exercises for skills building, self-reflection, and opportunities to network with peers.

Sample Topics

  • Managing self (I know I'm not perfect, but…)
  • Difficult communication (Do I have to talk to you again?)
  • Effective feedback, coaching, and mentoring (It’s my way or the highway.)
  • Crisis management (You think that’s bad, how about the time…)
  • Managing others (Why can’t they all just do their jobs and leave me alone?)
  • Managing groups (Not another meeting!)
  • Communicating up and down the academic hierarchy (I love my dean.)
  • Promoting diversity in PA programs (Why can’t they all be like me?)
  • Plans for follow-up (You mean I have to do something once this workshop is over?)

Early registration is encouraged; limited seats are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Participation is limited to one participant per program with a maximum of 20 participants. Although all faculty are encouraged to register, this workshop is intended for program directors, associate directors, and PA faculty with management responsibilities. The cost of this workshop is $375 (to be submitted ONLY upon notification of acceptance). Registration fee includes two breakfasts and two snacks. To take part in this workshop you must

  • Complete the registration form accessible from the link above and return the completed form by the April 16 deadline;
  • Make a commitment to attend the entire two-day workshop;
  • Read in advance: Difficult Conversations, by D. Stone, B. Patton, and S. Heen, Penguin Books (about $14 in paperback).

If you have any questions, please contact LaTasha Taylor, administrator, APAP Meetings, ltaylor@aapa.org; 703/836-2272, ext. 3414.
