PAEA’s Official Journal Has New Name, Will Move to Web-Based Process

By Steven Lane
Managing Editor, Journal of Physician Assistant Education

PAEA’s official journal, until recently titled Perspective on Physician Assistant Education, has been renamed the Journal of Physician Assistant Education. This will take effect beginning with the next issue, volume 17, number 1, due to be mailed in April. The change was recommended by the journal’s editorial advisory board to clarify that it is a peer-reviewed academic journal, rather than a magazine. Several faculty have reportedly had trouble convincing tenure and promotion boards that entries in Perspective were peer-reviewed academic work. “PA faculty are publishing some excellent manuscripts in our journal, and we wanted to be sure that they could get appropriate credit for them. We think the new name will make clear that our publication is a peer-reviewed journal,” said Eugene Jones, editor in chief of the Journal of Physician Assistant Education. The journal’s production is now handled at the PAEA national office in Alexandria, after several years of publication at the University of Utah PA Program.

Another important change is also under way. In the next few weeks, the journal will move to a Web-based process for submission of manuscripts and management of peer review. PAEA has contracted with eJournal Press (www.ejournalpress.com), a company that specializes in peer review software, to build a Web portal for the journal. Among their clients are the Journal of the American Medical Association, the Journal of the American College of Cardiology, and the Journal of the National Cancer Institute. The new Web system should facilitate the processes of submitting manuscripts, managing the peer review process, and tracking edits. Turnaround time should also be quicker. More detailed information will be sent out by e-mail shortly before the site goes live in the next few weeks. So start putting the final touches on those manuscripts!
