January 2005 Announcements

Reviewers Needed for APAP Student Writing Contest

Along with the contest entries coming in from students, faculty have been generously volunteering to serve as reviewers; however, more are needed, since a substantial student response to the contest is expected. Student entries will be sent anonymously in early February to the reviewers, who will have about a month in which to evaluate and rank submissions. If you would like to offer your assistance and learn which topics students are writing about, please contact I. Keir Todd, PA-C, M.Ed., facilitator of the APAP Student Writing Contest, at the Pacific University PA Program, keirtodd@pacificu.edu or 503/352-2085.

APAP Board of Directors Expands Charge to Its GEC Commission

At its monthly conference call in November, the Board of Directors expanded the original charge given to APAP’s Graduate Education Commission: “In addition to the study of what constitutes graduate education for the physician assistant, the APAP Board of Directors charges the commission to study and comment on what should constitute the terminal degree for the physician assistant educator seeking promotion and tenure at his/her academic institution.” The commission’s report is expected in November 2005.

Are Your Students Ready for the PANCE?

Students approaching graduation need a study tool that will reinforce knowledge and build confidence. There’s no better way to prepare for the PANCE exam than with the only review book developed and endorsed by AAPA and APAP. A Comprehensive Review for the Certification and Recertification Examinations, (2nd Ed., 2003), features exam questions based on the blueprint drafted by the NCCPA and incorporating the GRADRAT self-assessment exam. New features to this edition include a self-assessment tool with 600 completely new questions and detailed explanations, a new chapter on infectious diseases, and a post-test CD-ROM to help users identify their specific areas of strength and weakness. To order, visit the AAPA on-line store at http://www.aapa.org/aapastore or call the Fulfillment Center at 703/787-8044.

AAPA Veterans Caucus Announces Scholarship

The Veterans Caucus, Inc., a caucus of the AAPA, is announcing the opening of its 2005 scholarship season. In 2004 the caucus awarded more than $22,000 in scholarship money to eligible applicants. Requirements are not stringent and many students in the programs may be eligible to apply. Criteria for awarding most of the caucus scholarships are on the basis of previous military experience, current academic standing, academic and civil recognition, and the student’s community involvement. Interested students may visit and apply at the caucus Web site, http://www.veteranscaucus.org/ssinstru2010-03a.html.
