APAP Board Appraises October Education Forum Site
during Janaury Retreat

By Eileen Evans

The APAP Board of Directors and staff met in a two-day retreat during the first week of the year from January 2-5 in Phoenix, Arizona, to conduct official business and consider a variety of issues facing the Association. Despite a full agenda, board members had an opportunity to sample accommodations and hospitality at the Sheraton Wild Horse Pass Resort and Spa, the site for APAP’s 2003 October Education Forum.

Between sessions, board members pose at the Sheraton Wild Horse Pass Resort and Spa in Phoenix, Arizona: from left, Secretary/Treasurer Patrick Knott, Immediate Past President David Asprey, Director at Large Rosann Ippolito, President Jim Cawley, President Elect Paul Lombardo, and Director at Large Walter Eisenhauer.

Board members opened the retreat with a discussion of the Association’s mission. There was consensus that the mission statement should be updated to reflect APAP’s current role. President Elect Paul Lombardo will be addressing this issue as his term as president approaches. Closely related to the mission are the Association’s strategic directions. While there was agreement that its five goals remain relevant and appropriate, several of the specific actions that address these have been accomplished and will need to be changed, based on their status. APAP staff will make recommendations for revised objectives and actions items for consideration during the board’s February conference call.

Board members also addressed the all-important business plan adopted in October 2001. After one year of performance, service and marketing strategies will need to be refined and resources reallocated if the financial goals outlined in the plan to are to be met on schedule. This topic will be included in the Finance Committee’s March meeting agenda.

The board reviewed the timeline and renewal process for the AAPA management and CASPA contracts. Negotiations for renewing both will begin this spring.

Rounding out the agenda were committee updates and appointments, international PA program membership in APAP, and program rankings published by national newsmagazines.

CASPA

As of early January, the number of applicants for CASPA participating schools was up 9 percent over last year. Only a few programs have deadlines in February and March. While an increase in total number of applications is expected to hold through the end of the cycle, final data will be reported during the Semiannual Meeting in May.

The new CASPA cycle begins in April 2003 for classes entering PA programs in 2004. Additional programs have signed on to CASPA, and others have indicated their interest in joining. During its retreat, the APAP board approved new features to be added to the service. Detailed information and timelines for all programs participating in CASPA will be forthcoming from the CASPA Advisory Committee in February.

Committee on Ethnic and Cultural Diversity (CECD) Award

The board voted its approval for the establishment of a new award, the “APAP Excellence through Diversity Award,” proposed by the CECD to acknowledge member programs that strive to improve diversity in the profession. Guidelines will be outlined in upcoming issues of the APAP Update, and prizes for APAP’s first diversity award — $500 and a plaque — will be presented to the winning program at the Education Forum in October 2003.

International PA Program Membership in APAP

The board evaluated the issue of granting membership to international programs, thereby expanding APAP’s membership categories. Acknowledging that groups will seek out APAP membership for legitimacy and recognition and following much deliberation, the board agreed to continue discussing this at upcoming conference calls and meetings.

Program Rankings

The board addressed the subject of program rankings published in national newsmagazines — a frequent concern for prospective applicants deciding among PA programs. APAP staff are preparing a set of Frequently Asked Questions and Answers to be posted for applicants browsing the APAP Web site. These Q&As will provide additional, objective information beyond that included in the PA Programs Directory and direct students to programs’ Web sites as the best source of comprehensive information.
